We may have just celebrated the beginning of 2011, but this year, wedding flower trends are visiting the past. The single most identifiable trend for this upcoming year is contemporary vintage. What this means is that although brides are choosing flowers with more of a vintage flare, they’re displaying them in ways truer to today.
Flowers to choose from to achieve a look from yesteryear include peonies, hydrangeas, and tuberose. Peonies and hydrangeas have similar rotund shapes and large blossoms while tuberose have a delicate, thin appearance. Large-headed roses are an annual favourite despite trends and fall into the vintage trend with ease.
These flowers come in a range of colours from bold reds to creamy pastels. To have more of an aged look in your bouquets or centerpieces, choose cream whites over diamond whites. Choices in the pastel colour family might include ocean blues, dusty pinks, and romantic purples.
On the other hand, bolder colours add a contemporary touch. If you’re going with bright colours, the bolder they are, the better. Don’t be afraid to join such pairs as turquoise and deep red or magenta and orange.
2011’s flower trends are largely seeing a push towards simplicity. This includes choosing just one or two flowers for bouquets and centerpieces and displaying them en masse. Although simple in nature, the result is dramatic.
To encapsulate the vintage ideology, the best way to display the flowers as centerpieces would be in vases of different shapes and sizes. Scour your local flea markets or estate sales for a unique and plentiful selection of vases.
